Background

K057 reacts with the 53 kD intermediate filament protein desmin in human muscle cells. The antibody does not recognize other filament proteins. In normal tissues both striated (skeletal and cardiac) and smooth muscle cells are labelled. The labelling is confined to the Z bands in skeletal and cardiac muscle, giving a characteristic striated appearance. In tumour cells reacts the antibody with tumours of myogenic origin, both those arising from smooth muscle (leiomyosarcomas) and those derived from striated muscle (rhabdomyosarcomas) (1,2)
